Exposure: Power & Vulnerability by Kelly Williams

  • Basic Space Gallery 327 Northwest 9th Avenue Portland, OR, 97209 United States (map)

By harnessing the physicality of my abstract work and blending it with the fluidity of the figure, I am attempting a complicated, multi-layered investigation of the feminine. In the making of this work, I intentionally marred the surface, mined for deep textures, distorted proportions and exaggerated imperfect lines capturing the complexities of what it means to be human and female. I seek to evoke a sense of power and vulnerability in the stance and expression of these figures while simultaneously creating a less ‘pretty’ or perfect version of the exposed body. This allowed me to explore the complex contradictions and juxtapositions of the roles we are bound to, emotionally and historically as well is in the context of current culture. My intent is to shift the historically male gaze of sexualized objectification to the complex psychological experiences of the female herself. We are all uniquely scarred, broken and disfigured with our stories written in our bodies. Yet it is this in this exposure and vulnerability we embody our power and evolve both individually and as a society.
