Toccatas and Fugues | Alison Eriksen

  • Basic Space Gallery 327 Northwest 9th Avenue Portland, OR, 97209 United States (map)

"As an artist and musician, the elements of line, rhythm and movement are primary interests whether in visual or auditory form. Wire, wood, metal—the materials of musical instruments—are my materials in sculpture. Metal and wood conduct sound and respond to touch. Wire conveys movement and rhythm by its very essence.
The sculptures and monotypes in this exhibit are inspired by two different forms of musical composition—toccatas and fugues. The toccata, typically written for keyboard, is usually free-form, determined and frenetic in nature, often displaying the performer’s skill or 'touch'. The fugue involves systematic imitation of a main theme (subject) by different melodic lines (voices) that enter in succession and develop in counterpoint. Both of these musical forms, with their emphasis on line and rhythm, continue to motivate and challenge me as an artist." - Alison
